About Egretta intermedia (Wagler, 1829)

Common Name Etymology

As suggested by its scientific name, the intermediate egret (Egretta intermedia) is intermediate in size between the great egret and smaller white egret species like the little egret and cattle egret. Its size is closer to that of the little egret than the great egret.

Size Measurements

This bird measures roughly 56–72 cm (22–28 in) in total length, has a wingspan of 105–115 cm (41–45 in), and weighs approximately 400 g (14 oz).

Non-breeding Plumage

It has all-white plumage, generally dark legs, and a somewhat thick yellow bill.

Breeding Morphology Variation

Breeding individuals may show regional variation in features: they can have a reddish or black bill, greenish yellow gape skin, loose filamentous plumes on the breast and back, and dull yellow or pink coloration on the upper legs.

Sexual Dimorphism

Male and female intermediate egrets have similar appearance.
