Duellmanohyla rufioculis (Taylor, 1952)

Common Name & Size

Duellmanohyla rufioculis, commonly called the rufous-eyed brook frog, grows up to 4.1 cm (1.6 in) in length, with males being smaller than females.

Dorsal Coloration

Its coloration is extremely variable, ranging from plain brown to mottled mossy green.

White Markings

A distinct white stripe runs along the upper lip, flanks, and groin, and expands beneath the eyes to form a prominent white marking.

Iris & Pupil Characteristics

All specimens of this species have a distinctive red iris with horizontal pupils.

Distribution & Elevation Range

This frog is endemic to mountainous regions of Costa Rica, where it occurs on both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes at elevations between 700 to 1,600 m (2,310 to 5,250 ft) above sea level.

Habitat Preference

It favors humid forest habitats and lives in foliage growing alongside streams.

Threats & Population Status

While it is threatened by habitat destruction and uncommon across its native range, its overall population is believed to be stable.
