About Delphinium elatum L.
Delphinium elatum is a species of flowering plant in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, with common names alpine delphinium, bee larkspur, and candle larkspur. It is native to temperate regions of Asia and Europe. This is an erect herbaceous perennial that grows up to 1.8 m (5.9 ft), with deeply divided leaves. It produces spikes of blue or purple flowers during the summer. In cultivation, Delphinium elatum is hardy to temperatures as low as −20 °C (−4 °F), but needs a sheltered location with full sun, as well as deep, rich soil. All plants of this species must be securely staked to prevent flower heads from collapsing. Gloves should be worn when handling this plant, because accidental ingestion can cause severe discomfort. Delphinium elatum is the source of many ornamental cultivars, which come in a range of colors including blue, purple, pink, cream, and white. Cultivar series include Magic Fountains, Pacific giant, Dwarf Pacific, New Millennium, and Aurora. The Aurora series has six varieties: Blue, Deep Purple, Lavender, Light Blue, Light Purple and White. The following cultivars have earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit: 'Lord Butler', 'Sungleam', and 'Sweethearts' (from the New Millennium Series).
