Size and Weight

The undulated tinamou, Crypturellus undulatus, is approximately 28–30 cm (11.0–11.8 in) long and weighs around 300 g (0.66 lb).

Base Body Color

Its overall base color is brownish with varying degrees of grey tint, which differs between subspecies.

Dorsal Pattern

It has a prominent black pattern across its back and neck, ranging from clear barring to faint vermiculation.

Subspecies Color Variation

For example, the subspecies C. u. undulatus is a relatively rich brown with strong barring, while C. u. yapura is darker, more grey-toned, and only has faint vermiculations.

Underpart Coloration

This species has a whitish throat; the rest of its underparts are colored olive-grey to buff, with dark vermiculation on the lower flanks and vent.

Movement Patterns

Though the species is generally considered resident, minor local seasonal movements between different habitats do occur.
