Chaetodon fasciatus Forsskål, 1775, commonly known as the diagonal butterflyfish, has a yellow body marked with 11 diagonal stripes.

Head Markings

A vertical black band runs through the eye on its head, and it has an incomplete white band on the forehead.

Fin Coloration

Its dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are all yellow.

Maximum Size

This species reaches a maximum total length of 22 centimetres, or 8.7 inches.

General Distribution

The diagonal butterflyfish is distributed in the northwestern Indian Ocean.

Recorded Range

It has been recorded from the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, ranging south as far as Kenya.

Habitat

Diagonal butterflyfish live over and around corals, and they feed on corals.

Diet Details

They have also been observed feeding on gelatinous zooplankton, including jellyfish in the class Scyphozoa and comb jellies in the phylum Ctenophora.
