Canthigaster janthinoptera, commonly called the honeycomb toby, is a pufferfish species belonging to the family Tetraodontidae.
Native Region
This species is native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Geographic Range
Its range extends along the east coast of Africa south to the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, east to Oeno Island, the Line Islands, and the Marquesas Islands, north to Japan, and south to Lord Howe Island.
Related Replacement Species
Near the Hawaiian Islands, this species is replaced by its relative Canthigaster jactator, and in the Eastern Pacific it is replaced by Canthigaster punctatissima.
Habitat and Depth Range
It lives in reef environments, most often near sponges, at depths between 1 and 30 meters (3 to 98 feet).
Size
It reaches a total length of 9 centimeters (3.5 inches).
Diet Composition
Its diet includes sponges, polychaetes, and algae, plus small amounts of tunicates, crustaceans, echinoderms, and corals.
Reproduction and Social Behavior
It is an oviparous species, and is most commonly found alone or in pairs.
