About Calonectris leucomelas (Temminck, 1836)

Common Name and Primary Diet

Commonly known as the streaked shearwater, Calonectris leucomelas feeds mainly on fish and squid.

Feeding Associations

It follows fishing boats, and is attracted to anchovy crawls off the coast of Japan.

Fishing-Related Mortality Causes

It is often caught as by-catch in fishing nets, or drowns after ingesting bait on long-line fishing lines.

Nesting Behavior and Habitat

The streaked shearwater nests in burrows, and prefers forested hills for its nesting habitat.

Additional Mortality Sources

This bird is abundant and widespread, but it experiences additional mortality from becoming entangled in fishing nets, predation by cats and rats, and harvesting by some traditional endemic human cultures.

Marine Habitat Types

This is a pelagic species that is also found in inshore waters.

Breeding Distribution

It occurs in the Pacific Ocean, where it nests in Japan and the Korean Peninsula, predominantly on their offshore islands.

Post-Breeding Migration Range

After the breeding season, streaked shearwaters migrate south to feed in the seas off northern New Guinea, the Arafura Sea, and the South China Sea.

Vagrant Sighting Locations

Individuals have also been reported far off the west coast of the United States, off the southern coast of India, and from New Zealand.

Inland Specimen Record

There is also a recorded specimen of this species collected in Wyoming.
