This species lives on reef slopes at depths ranging from 3 to 160 meters (9.8 to 524.9 feet), and adult individuals are found in deeper water than juveniles.
Size and Weight
The species can reach a total length of 55 centimeters (22 inches), with a maximum recorded weight of 1.8 kilograms (4.0 pounds).
Human Relevance
It has minor importance to local commercial fisheries, is also a popular game fish, and is traded for use in aquariums.
Taxonomic History
While it was previously classified as a subspecies of Bodianus bilunulatus, it is currently recognized as a separate, distinct species.
