About Bauhinia forficata Link
Bauhinia forficata Link is a medium-sized broadleaf evergreen tree. It typically grows 25 to 30 feet (7.6 to 9.1 m) tall, with a canopy spread that ranges from 25 to 35 feet (7.6 to 10.7 m). This species has a symmetrical crown that can be vase-shaped, rounded, or spreading, with a dense canopy of medium texture. It grows at a moderate rate when grown under suitable conditions.
Bauhinia forficata is native to South America, and its natural range in Brazil extends from the state of Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Sul. Within Brazil, it grows in multiple diverse ecosystems, including the semi-arid Caatinga region, forest fragments in the state of Paraná, and along Amazon coastal areas. This species is not native to North America. It usually grows in well-drained soils, and grows best in full sun or areas with high, intermittent shade, such as under open pine canopies. While it is tolerant of drought, the plant benefits from occasional irrigation or afternoon shade during hot, dry periods, to keep its flowers from drying out. When grown in alkaline soils, it may develop interveinal chlorosis caused by nutrient imbalances. It is adapted to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) hardiness zones 10A through 11.
