Astragalus douglasii (Torr. & A.Gray) A.Gray is a bushy perennial herb. It produces multiple erect or prostrate stems that can reach up to one meter in length. It grows abundant leaves, each up to 18 centimeters long, composed of oval-shaped leaflets. Its open inflorescence holds up to 30 whitish to pale yellow flowers, with each individual flower measuring about one centimeter long. The calyx is green, with lobes ranging from 0.7 to 2.6 mm (0.03 to 0.10 inches) in length. The fruit of this species is an inflated legume pod, growing up to 6 centimeters long and 3 centimeters wide; as it dries, it develops a thin, papery texture.
