Taxonomic Identity

Anolis biporcatus (Wiegmann, 1834), commonly called the neotropical green anole or giant green anole, is a species of anole.

Distribution

This species occurs in both disturbed and undisturbed forests across Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and Venezuela.

Taxonomic Revision

In 2017, more southern populations located in southwestern Colombia and western Ecuador were reclassified as a separate distinct species, A. parvauritus.

General Appearance

As its common names indicate, the neotropical green anole/giant green anole is mostly green in color and relatively large, ranking among the largest anole species found on the American mainland.

Snout-Vent Length

Males of this species have a snout–vent length of approximately 7.0–10.3 cm (2.8–4.1 in), while females grow slightly larger, with a snout–vent length of about 7.0–10.8 cm (2.8–4.3 in).

Sexual Dimorphism

Overall, this species shows very little sexual dimorphism.

Tail Length

The tail of Anolis biporcatus is roughly twice as long as its snout-to-vent length.
