Taxonomic Classification

This species, Amazona festiva, has two recognized subspecies.

Subspecies Plumage Differences

Compared to the nominate subspecies, the bodini subspecies has more red coloring on the forecrown and more blue coloring on the face.

Shared Adult Plumage Features

For both subspecies, the outer wings—including the outer webs of the primary feathers and the primary coverts—are a deep blue color when the bird is in flight, and both subspecies also have a red rump.

Juvenile Plumage Features

Juvenile birds of both subspecies have a reduced amount of red on the rump.

Subspecies Distribution

The nominate subspecies lives near rivers within the Amazon Basin, while the bodini subspecies occurs near the Orinoco River.
