About Acmispon strigosus (Nutt.) D.D.Sokoloff
Acmispon strigosus is a prostrate annual herb. As suggested by its scientific name, it is often roughly hairy, but can also be somewhat woolly, fuzzy, or nearly hairless. Its slender branches bear leaves that range from one half inch to one inch long. Each leaf is pinnately divided into 4 to 9 obovate, alternate leaflets arranged on a flattened rachis. The inflorescence holds one or two pealike flowers, which range in color from yellow to orange to red. Each flower's corolla measures one half to one centimeter across. The fruit is a legume pod between 1 and 3 centimeters long. This species is native to the southwestern United States, specifically California and Nevada, and northern Mexico. It grows in a wide variety of habitat types, including disturbed areas.
