About Trachypithecus obscurus (Reid, 1837)

Nomenclature

Scientific name: Trachypithecus obscurus (Reid, 1837). Common name: dusky leaf monkey.

Subspecies Fur Variation

This species shows different fur color variations between subspecies.

Infant Fur Coloration

Infants are born with an orange coat, and their fur color changes as they mature into adults.

Dorsal and Abdominal Fur Color

Abdominal fur is typically several shades lighter than dorsal fur; dorsal fur can be brown, black, or grey.

Facial Fur Pattern

Bright white fur forms circular patterns around the species' eyes.

General Size

The dusky leaf monkey is a relatively small primate.

Average Body Weight

A study by G. J Burton measured 25 wild male and 44 wild female individuals: the average weight of sampled males was 7.39 kilograms, and the average weight of sampled females was 6.47 kilograms.

Sexual Dimorphism

These measurements indicate that the species is sexually dimorphic, as sampled females are on average 12% smaller than sampled males.

Male Testicle Weight Correlation

Burton's study also found that among the 25 sampled males, the weight of one testicle directly correlates with the weight of the other, meaning the weight of one can be used to estimate the weight of the other.

Female Ovary Weight Correlation

For females, there was no statistically significant correlation between the weights of the two ovaries strong enough to allow one ovary's weight to predict the other's.

Distribution and Habitat

The dusky leaf monkey is distributed across Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand, where it lives in tropical forests.
