About Thunbergia coccinea Wall.
Thunbergia coccinea Wall. is a perennial climbing vine species with a tuberous root system. Mature vines grow 3 to 8 meters long. Its leaves are arranged oppositely, have an ovate or lanceolate shape, dentate margins, and pinnate venation, and both leaf surfaces are covered in fine hairs. It flowers from January to April, producing red tubular flowers. After pollination, it develops glabrous loculicidal fruiting capsules. This species can reproduce sexually via seeds, and also asexually via vegetative reproduction. It is native to South and Southeast Asia, where its native range includes Assam, Bangladesh, South-Central China, the East and West Himalayas, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Tibet, and Vietnam. It has been introduced to areas outside its native range, including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. It grows in wet tropical climates. Tribal communities in Assam, India use this plant as a medicinal herb to treat pain, fever, inflammation, eye infections, and diabetes.
