Thapsia gummifera, which has the synonym Margotia gummifera, is a flowering plant species that belongs to the Apiaceae family. It is native to the western Mediterranean region, specifically growing naturally in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. It has been proposed as the candidate for the plant known as silphium from antiquity, which went extinct in Libya during the 5th century.
