About Stethojulis strigiventer (Bennett, 1833)
Nomenclature and Taxonomic Placement
Stethojulis strigiventer, which also goes by the common names three-ribbon wrasse, silverstreak wrasse, silverbelly wrasse, lined rainbowfish, and silver-streaked rainbowfish, is a species of marine ray-finned wrasse that belongs to the family Labridae.
Habitat and Substrate
This species lives in seagrass beds, inner reef areas, and shallow lagoons with substrates made up of a mix of sand, rubble, and algae.
Group Behavior and Depth Range
It lives in small groups that swim across large areas at depths down to 20 metres, which equals 66 feet.
Distribution Range
The species' distribution range stretches from the Red Sea south along the eastern African coast to Algoa Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, east to the Marshall and Tuamotu islands, north to Honshu, and south to New South Wales.
Formal Description History
This species was first formally described under the name Julis strigiventer in 1833 by English zoologist Edward Turner Bennett, who lived from 1797 to 1836, with its type locality recorded as Mauritius.
Type Species Designation
When Albert Günther established the genus Stethojulis, he designated Julis strigiventer as the genus's type species.
