About Sterculia murex Hemsl.

Sterculia murex Hemsl., commonly known as lowveld chestnut, is a southern African tree that belongs to the family Malvaceae and the subfamily Sterculioideae. It has a very limited distribution, restricted to the lowveld region of eastern Mpumalanga. Following S. alexandri, it is the southernmost representative of the genus Sterculia found in Africa. Kew currently recognizes approximately 92 species of the genus Sterculia, which are confined to the tropics and areas slightly beyond the tropics at low elevations.
