About Sterculia lanceolata Cav.

Sterculia lanceolata Cav. is a tree species in the genus Sterculia of the family Malvaceae. It was previously classified in the family Sterculiaceae, which is now reduced to a subfamily within Malvaceae. This species is distributed in southern China, including Hainan Island, and Vietnam. In Vietnam, it goes by many local common names: trôm mề gà, sang sé, sảng, trôm lá mác, trôm thon, che van, chóc móc and tròm thon. Its flowers produce five separate carpels, also called follicles. Each follicle splits open soon after pollination, allowing the seeds to develop while fully exposed to the environment. Each scarlet or orange follicle holds up to six oblong black seeds.
