Taxonomy and Nomenclature

Solenostomus paegnius, commonly called the roughsnout ghost pipefish, is a species of ghost pipefish belonging to the family Solenostomidae.

Distribution Range

This is an Indo-Pacific species, with a distribution that ranges from the Red Sea eastward to Japan and Australia.

Habitat and Depth

It lives over algal or rubble reefs and sandy sea beds, most often found at depths below 10 metres (33 ft).

Breeding Behavior

Individuals are largely pelagic before they settle onto the substrate to breed.
