About Serruria rubricaulis R.Br.

Serruria rubricaulis, commonly known as the red-stem spiderhead, is a flowering shrub in the genus Serruria that is part of the fynbos vegetation. This species is endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, where its range extends from the Kleinrivierberge down to the Elim plain and coastal areas. It is a small, upright shrub that reaches only 30 centimeters in height, and blooms from July to November each year. The plant is able to resprout after wildfires. Two months after flowering completes, fruit drops from the plant, and ants disperse the seeds by storing them in their nests. Serruria rubricaulis is unisexual, and pollination is carried out by insects. It grows in clay-based acidic soils at elevations between 20 and 100 meters above sea level.
