About Serruria heterophylla Meisn.
Serruria heterophylla, commonly called the spindly spiderhead, is a flowering shrub in the genus Serruria that is part of South Africa's fynbos vegetation. This species is native to the Western Cape province, where it grows in areas near Kleinmond and the Klein River Mountains. The shrub grows in an upright form, reaching up to 1.0 metre in height, and blooms from July to October each year. The entire plant dies after a fire, but its seeds survive to germinate new plants. Two months after flowering finishes, the fruit drops off the plant, and ants disperse the seeds by storing them in their underground nests. This species is unisexual, and pollination is carried out by insects. It grows in sandstone soil at elevations between 90 and 310 metres above sea level. In Afrikaans, this plant is called speekbeinspinnekopbos.
