About Serruria brownii Meisn.

This species, scientifically named Serruria brownii Meisn., is an erect shrub that grows to only 50 cm (20 in) tall, and produces flowers between June and October. The plant itself is killed by fire, but its seeds survive fire events. Two months after flowering finishes, the fruit drops off, and ants disperse the seeds by storing them in their nests. Serruria brownii is a bisexual plant, and pollination is carried out by insects. In Afrikaans, it goes by the common name fleskwasbos. This plant grows on plains stretching from Hopefield to Tygerberg, and occurs most often in granite soil, shale, and thick sand at altitudes ranging from 50 m (160 ft) to 250 m (820 ft).
