Sceloporus taeniocnemis, commonly called the Guatemalan emerald spiny lizard, and known as la chachapaja in Spanish, is a species of lizard belonging to the family Phrynosomatidae.

Native Range

This species is native to Guatemala and the adjacent portion of southeastern Mexico.

Subspecies Recognition

Two subspecies of S. taeniocnemis are currently recognized.

Detailed Distribution

The geographic range of S. taeniocnemis covers central Guatemala and the Mexican state of Chiapas.

Habitat Characteristics

Its preferred natural habitat is forest, located at altitudes between 1,200 and 2,500 meters (equal to 3,900 to 8,200 feet).

Reproduction Method

S. taeniocnemis reproduces via viviparity, meaning it gives birth to live young.
