About Ruellia tuberosa L.

Ruellia tuberosa L. is a small biennial plant with thick, fusiform, tuberous roots and prominent funnel-shaped violet flowers. It produces a sessile fruit capsule 2 centimeters (0.8 inches) long that holds approximately 20 seeds. Common names for this species including popping pod, duppy gun, and cracker plant come from children’s play with its dry pods, which pop when rubbed with spit or water. This plant can grow in moist, shady environments, but it prefers to grow in grasslands and roadsides. It frequently occurs as a weed in cultivated fields, and also grows in xerophile and ruderal habitats. In folk medicine and Ayurvedic medicine, this plant is believed to have diuretic, anti-diabetic, antipyretic, analgesic, antihypertensive, and gastroprotective properties, and it has been used to treat gonorrhea. It is also used as a natural dye for textiles.
