About Pterostylis acuminata R.Br.
Pterostylis acuminata, commonly called the sharp greenhood, produces a rosette of three to six dark green, oblong leaves. Each leaf measures 10โ40 mm (0.4โ2 in) long and 8โ20 mm (0.3โ0.8 in) wide. A single green and white flower grows on a 150โ250 mm (6โ10 in) tall flowering spike. The flowers are 19โ25 mm (0.7โ1 in) long, 9โ12 mm (0.4โ0.5 in) wide, and lean forward in a nodding habit. The dorsal sepal and petals are fused, curving forward to form a hood over the flower's column. The tip of this hood is sharply pointed and brownish in color. A broad, bulging gap occurs in the sinus between the two lateral sepals, and a large gap sits between the lateral sepals and petals. The lateral sepals bear thread-like tips 20โ25 mm (0.8โ1 in) long. The labellum curves outward and protrudes through the sinus; it is 14โ16 mm (0.55โ0.63 in) long, about 4 mm (0.2 in) wide, curved, reddish-brown, and pointed. Flowering takes place between March and May. This species grows in coastal forest and heath habitats in Queensland and New South Wales, with an additional isolated population located in far eastern Victoria.
