Scientific Classification
The black-eared flying fox, scientifically named Pteropus melanotus, is a species of megabat in the family Pteropodidae. It is also commonly called Blyth's flying fox.
Primary Distribution
This bat is found on the Andaman Islands and Nicobar Islands of India, and in Sumatra, Indonesia.
Christmas Island Population
A critically endangered population native to Christmas Island is currently classified as a subspecies of Pteropus melanotus, but it may actually be a separate distinct species called Pteropus natalis.
Native Range
The black-eared flying fox is native to multiple island groups across the Indo-Pacific, including the Andaman Islands, Nicobar Islands, and Mentawai Islands.
Roosting Habitat
It most commonly roosts in large colonies within forests located near the coast, particularly in mangrove areas.
