It is native to southern Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America. This species usually grows in coastal freshwater or slightly brackish habitats, growing alongside mangroves that occupy areas with higher salt concentrations. The timber of Pterocarpus officinalis is sold commercially.
