About Pseudacris streckeri Wright & Wright, 1933

Adult Size

Strecker's chorus frogs (Pseudacris streckeri Wright & Wright, 1933) reach an adult size of approximately 1.5 inches, or around 3.5 cm.

Dorsal Coloration

Their base color ranges from light grey and brown to green, marked with darker longitudinal blotches, and they have a distinctive dark spot running underneath the eye.

Ventral Coloration

The underside is typically white, with yellow or orange coloring around the groin area.

Taxonomic Controversy

There is ongoing taxonomic controversy over this group: some authorities treat it as a single species with two subspecies, the nominotypical Strecker's chorus frog (Pseudacris streckeri streckeri Wright & Wright, 1933) and the Illinois chorus frog (Pseudacris streckeri illinoensis (Smith, 1951)), while others recognize the Illinois chorus frog as a separate full species.

Species Split Rationale

Collins first recognized the Illinois chorus frog as its own species; this treatment has been adopted by ASW6.0 and Amphibiaweb, based on the taxon's diagnosability from P. streckeri and its allopatric distribution.

IUCN Red List Status

The 2013.2 IUCN Red List has not incorporated this proposed taxonomic split.
