About Protea humiflora Andrews

Protea humiflora, commonly known as the patentleaf sugarbush, is a flowering shrub in the Protea genus. This plant is endemic to South Africa, where its distribution ranges from the Du Toitskloof Mountains to the Langeberg and Waboomsberg. It grows up to 2 meters in diameter, and flowers from July to September, with peak blooming in August. Fire kills the entire plant, but its seeds survive the fire. The seeds are held inside a protective shell and dispersed by wind. P. humiflora is unisexual, and pollination is carried out by rats and mice. It grows on dry slopes in Karoo fynbos, at altitudes between 450 and 1200 meters.
