About Polygonella americana (Fisch. & C.A.Mey.) Small

This flowering plant species, commonly known as southern jointweed or American jointweed, is a member of the knotweed family. It was first described in 1845 under the name Polygonum americanum. It was later moved to the genus Polygonella, where it was called Polygonella americana (Fisch. & C.A.Mey.) Small. In 2015, after a series of molecular phylogenetic studies, the entire genus Polygonella was subsumed into Polygonum, restoring this species to its original placement. This species is native to the Southeastern United States, with scattered populations extending west as far as New Mexico. It prefers to grow in dry, sandy habitats.
