Nomenclature and Endemism

The Iberian green woodpecker, scientifically named Picus sharpei, is a medium-sized woodpecker that is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula.

Taxonomic Classification

It was previously classified as a subspecies of the European green woodpecker, but it can be distinguished by two key physical features: it has very little black coloring on its head, and the ring around each of its eyes is dusky instead of black.

Vocalization

Its vocalization has been described as sibilant, or hiss-like.
