About Picea morrisonicola Hayata
Picea morrisonicola, commonly known as Taiwan spruce, is a conifer species belonging to the Pinaceae family. It is endemic to Taiwan, and is the only spruce species native to the island. This is the southernmost spruce species in the world, with its distribution located near the Tropic of Cancer, so it is generally only considered hardy to USDA Zone 8. Taiwan spruce is a large tree, reaching up to 50 meters (160 feet) in height and 1.5 meters (4 feet 11 inches) in trunk diameter. It grows at altitudes between approximately 2,000 and 2,500 meters (6,600 and 8,200 feet) in ravines and mountain slopes of Taiwan's Central Mountain Range, and typically grows mixed with other tree species. It is one of the most important timber species in Taiwan, and its populations have declined due to overexploitation.
