Native Range

This fish species is native to eastern and southern Brazil, northern Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.

Introduced Range

It has been introduced to Australia, Malawi, and New Zealand, both intentionally for mosquito control and accidentally as escapees from the aquarium trade.

Ecological Impacts

It has been recorded to cause negative ecological impacts in regions where it has been introduced.

Size

Females of this species reach a total length of 6 centimetres (2.4 inches), while males grow to a smaller size.
