About Pediomelum subacaule (Torr. & A.Gray) Rydb.
Pediomelum subacaule is a flowering plant species belonging to the legume family. It has two common names: Nashville breadroot and whiterim scurfpea. It is native to a small area of Eastern North America, where it is only found growing on limestone cedar glades. These glades lie within the Interior Low Plateau and Ridge and Valley ecoregions of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. This species is a geophyte, and it is well adapted to the desert-like conditions of flat limestone glades. The plants bloom in April, produce seeds in May, then die back quickly in summer. They begin growing again when cool fall temperatures arrive. This life cycle aligns with water availability in the harsh cedar glade environment, which is often water-saturated in winter and spring, but becomes extremely hot and dry during summer.
