About Paronychia herniarioides (Michx.) Nutt.
Paronychia herniarioides has stems that range from 5 to 35 cm (2.0 to 13.8 in) in length. Its leaves are obtuse, and shaped oblong-elliptical to spatulate. The leaves measure 3 to 12 mm (0.12 to 0.47 in) in length, and 1.5 to 3.5 mm (0.059 to 0.138 in) in width. This species grows in exposed sandy soils of fire-dependent habitats in the southeastern United States, including sandhill and scrub habitats. Across its entire range, the species is rare; even in Florida, it remains uncommon. This rarity is clearly illustrated by its record in North Carolina: for more than 200 years, the only proof of the species' occurrence there was the type specimen collected by Michaux, until it was recently rediscovered in Scotland County, North Carolina.
