About Pareas boulengeri (Angel, 1920)
Dorsal Body Coloration
Pareas boulengeri has a very light brown upper body with minimal countershading.
Postocular Dark Line
A narrow, dark brown, intermittently broken line runs from the posterior edge of the eye to the corner of the mouth.
Lateral Dorsal Head Lines
Two wider, frequently breaking dorsal lines start at the subocular scale, run along the side of the parietal scales toward the head and neck, where they lose definition.
Pattern Fading on Body
These lines fade into irregular dots that may broaden across the sides, and disappear toward the latter half of the body.
Cephalic Scale Dots
These dots are tightly grouped on the cephalic scales.
Juvenile Pattern Clarity
Spots on juvenile Pareas boulengeri are much clearer.
Reproduction and Incubation
This species lays 5 to 7 eggs per clutch; based on observations of other species in its genus, the eggs likely require roughly 6.5 weeks of incubation before hatching.
Endemic Range
Pareas boulengeri is endemic to China.
Population and Distribution Status
It is widespread within China but rare, due to its low population density, and its range experiences very little fragmentation.
Habitat and Elevation Range
Pareas boulengeri is mostly arboreal, and prefers montane forests at elevations between 313 and 1,360 metres above sea level.
