Pareas atayal is a slender yellow-brown snake that can grow to approximately 50 cm (20 inches) in total length.
Dorsal & Flank Base Color
The dorsal surface of this species is primarily yellow-brown or ochre, with flanks that are slightly lighter in color.
Ventral Base Color
The belly and chin are yellow-white or cream.
Lateral Dark Bars
Distinct dark vertical bars, each roughly two scales wide, are present along the sides of the snake.
Body Dot Markings
Very small brownish dots are scattered across the dorsum and flanks, with a lower density of dots on the flanks than on the dorsum, and an even lower density on the ventral surface than on the flanks.
Postorbital Stripe Origin
Two thin, clearly defined black stripes extend from the upper and lower edges of each postorbital scale.
Lower Postorbital Stripe Path
The lower postorbital stripe reaches the front section of the seventh supralabial scale, and does not extend further onto the lower jaw or chin.
Upper Postorbital Stripe Pattern
The upper postorbital stripes meet at the base of the snake's head, forming an M-shaped arch.
