About Packera plattensis (Nutt.) W.A.Weber & Á.Löve

Packera plattensis, commonly called prairie ragwort or prairie groundsel, is a species in the genus Packera of the Asteraceae family. It was previously classified within the genus Senecio. This plant grows across the entire tallgrass prairie region. As a prairie wildflower, it blooms relatively early, with a flowering period from April to July that varies based on local climate. It can be easily mistaken for two similar species: golden ragwort (Packera aurea), which has a hairless stem and heart-shaped basal leaves, and Senecio integerrimus, which has mostly smooth rather than fern-like leaves and much larger basal leaves.
