About Pachystachys lutea (Ruiz & Pav. ex Schult.) Nees
Pachystachys lutea, commonly called the golden shrimp plant or lollipop plant, is a tropical evergreen shrub with soft stems. It grows between 0.5 and 2.5 meters tall and is native to Peru. Its short-lived, zygomorphic white flowers have long throats, and emerge one after another from overlapping bright yellow bracts that grow on racemes. These racemes are produced throughout the warm months of the year. The Latin specific epithet lutea translates to "yellow". This plant is cultivated as an ornamental. In cold temperate regions, it needs protection from temperatures that drop below 10 °C (50 °F). It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
