Ornithopus sativus Brot., commonly called serradella or common birdsfoot, is a flowering plant species that belongs to the legume family Fabaceae. It is native to Southwestern Europe and Northwest Africa, specifically occurring in Portugal, western Spain, southwestern France, northern Morocco, and northern Algeria. This species has been introduced to many regions across the globe as a legume forage crop; introduced locations include most of central and eastern Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, the Azores, South Africa, Kenya, Java, most of Australia, the North Island of New Zealand, southern Chile, and California. It is recognized for producing high-quality forage even when growing in highly acidic, nutrient-poor soils.
