About Ophrys lutea Cav.

The flowers of Ophrys lutea Cav. have broad asymmetric lateral sepals, with a lowered dorsal sepal. Petals are extended. The labellum is yellow, or bears a velvety macula that is spotted blue-grey or brown. This orchid is pollinated by male Andrena bees. Within the genus Ophrys, this species is distinct for how pollinating bees behave: when they sit on the labellum, they face away from the pollinaria instead of facing toward them, so they collect pollinaria on their abdomen. This orchid grows in full sun or shade, on limey dry or damp soils, in pastures and thin woodland.
