Native Distribution

Its native range covers continental Europe (including Scandinavia), the Black Sea region, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Growth Form and Size

This species is an erect shrub that grows to a maximum height of 8 ft (2.4 m).

Habitat Adaptation

It is a pioneer species adapted to grow on recently scoured riverbanks in mountainous areas.

It has been cultivated in Great Britain since 1582.
