Chemical characteristics: The main components of this plant’s essential oil include pulegone, menthone, menthol, (−)-β-pinene, (−)-α-pinene, limonene, isomenthone, piperic acid, eucalyptol, and carvone. Nineteen total compounds were identified in the essential oil from the plant’s flowering tops. The most abundant compounds in this oil are 29% neomenthol, 24% menthone, 20% menthol, and 8% piperitone.

Medicinal uses: In Andean indigenous medicine traditions, the plant is brewed into tea, and used medicinally as a carminative and aphrodisiac.
