It is most commonly known as the sixspine leatherjacket, and has many other common names: Freycinet's leatherjacket, grey leatherjacket, orange-spotted leatherjacket, reef leatherjacket, six-spine leatherjacket, six-spined leatherjacket, Skottowe's leatherjacket, and variable leatherjacket.

Size

This species grows to a length of approximately 60 cm (24 in).

Distribution

It is endemic to the temperate waters of southern Australia.
