Maurandya barclayana Lindl. is a herbaceous perennial climbing plant that reaches 4 m (13 ft) in height. It is a fibrous-rooted climbing perennial with stems that usually develop adventitious roots.
Leaf Blade Shape and Size
Its leaves are ivy-like; leaf blades are triangular-cordate or triangular-hastate, measuring 1–3.5 cm long and 8–30 mm wide. The leaf apex ranges from acute to attenuate, while basal lobes are acute or indistinct.
Leaf Margin, Venation and Petiole
Leaves have small teeth along their margins toward the base, are palmately veined, and grow from a 1–1.5 cm long petiole.
Flower Characteristics and Bloom Period
This species produces white, pink, or purple tubular flowers in spring and summer.
Cultivation Frost Tolerance
In cultivation, since Maurandya barclayana does not tolerate frost, it is most often grown under glass in conservatories in cooler temperate climates, or alternatively grown as a tender annual.
Cultivation Requirements and Propagation
It requires a sheltered position in full sun, has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, and can be propagated by seed or softwood cuttings.
