About Malaxis unifolia Michx.

Malaxis unifolia Michx., commonly known as the green adder's-mouth orchid, is a species of orchid. Its distribution ranges across eastern and central Canada from Newfoundland to Manitoba, central and eastern United States from Maine to Florida, extending west to Minnesota, eastern Kansas, and eastern Texas, as well as Mexico, Central America, and the Greater Antilles including Cuba, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. This small orchid grows no taller than 50 cm. It usually produces only one leaf, and rarely produces two. Its flowers are green and arranged in a raceme; the inflorescence often looks like an umbel at first before it elongates. It can produce up to 160 small green flowers, which have a three-lobed labellum and strongly recurved lateral petals. In the northern portion of its range, it flowers in spring and early summer, while in the southern part of its range it blooms later, into fall.
