Recognized Subspecies
The International Ornithological Congress recognizes two subspecies of this bird: M. p. ptilosus (first described by Jardine & Selby in 1835), which is found on the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and the Batu Islands; and M. p. trichorrhos (first described by Temminck in 1836), which is found on the Bangka Belitung Islands and Borneo.
