Lupinus nanus Douglas ex Benth. is commonly known as sky lupine, field lupine, dwarf lupin, ocean-blue lupine, or Douglas' annual lupine. This lupine species is native to the western United States, specifically found growing natively in California, Nevada, and on Steens Mountain in eastern Oregon. It typically grows on slopes and in open or disturbed areas located below 1300 meters. As an annual plant, it reaches a height of 6 to 20 inches (15 to 51 cm) and produces blue flowers marked with white or yellow spots. It blooms during the months of March, April, and May. The plant contains the alkaloid anagyrine, and is classified as toxic if eaten directly. Biologically active chemicals identified in Lupinus nanus include genistein, 2'-hydroxygenistein, luteone, and wighteone.
