Lupinus affinis J.Agardh is an alternate-leaved, hairy annual herb. It grows 20 to 50 centimetres (8 to 20 inches) in height. Each palmate leaf is made up of 5 to 8 leaflets, each up to 5 centimetres (2 inches) long. Its inflorescence reaches up to 20 centimetres (8 inches) long, and bears whorls of flowers that are each about 1 centimetre (1⁄3 inch) long. Most flowers are purple-blue with a whitish patch on the banner, though flower color can also be white or blue. Its bloom period falls between March, April, and May. The fruit is a hairy legume pod up to 5 centimetres (2 inches) long, which contains 5 to 8 seeds. It is commonly found at elevations between 0 and 2,000 feet.
